FAQ
Q: How many steps are there to the summit? 👣
A: There are approximately 5,500 stone steps to reach the top. To put that into perspective, it is nearly five times the number of steps at Sigiriya Rock. It is a test of endurance, but the path is entirely paved and has railings for support during the steeper final stretches.
Q: What is the "Shadow of the Peak" phenomenon? 📐
A: At sunrise, if the weather is clear, the mountain casts a perfectly symmetrical triangular shadow across the surrounding clouds and plains. This optical marvel only lasts for a few minutes after dawn and is considered one of the most spiritual moments of the climb.
Q: Is there a dress code for the summit? 👗
A: Yes. Because the summit is a high-altitude Buddhist temple, you must cover your shoulders and knees once you reach the top. We recommend wearing moisture-wicking hiking layers for the climb and carrying a sarong or light jacket to wrap around you once you arrive at the sacred area.
Q: How cold does it actually get at the top? ❄️
A: While it may be 25°C at the base, the summit can drop to 5°C–8°C before dawn, often with high winds. The "wait" for sunrise can be freezing if you are drenched in sweat from the climb. Pro Tip: Bring a dry T-shirt to change into at the summit and a warm windbreaker to trap heat while you wait for the sun.
Q: Can I buy food and water on the way up? ☕
A: During the pilgrimage season (Dec–May), the trail is lined with small "Ambalamas" (rest huts) and tea stalls selling hot Ceylon tea, roti, and snacks. Outside of the season, these shops are closed, so you must carry at least 2 liters of water and your own energy snacks.
Q: Should I avoid specific days for the climb? 🗓️
A: If possible, avoid Poya (Full Moon) days and the Sinhalese/Tamil New Year in April. During these times, the crowds are so dense that you may spend 3 hours standing still in a human traffic jam on the stairs, potentially missing the sunrise entirely.
