Kelaniya is about 7 kilometres east of Colombo on the Colombo-Kandy road. Kelaniya is a major city in the Gampaha district, which is located to the south of the Colombo district.
The Kelani River, one of Sri Lanka’s main rivers, originates in the Sri Pada mountain range and flows through the Kelaniya valley into the ocean in Colombo.
The amount of water carried to the ocean varies greatly depending on the season: during the monsoon, the river flow is 800 – 1500 m3/s, while during the dry season, it is only 20 – 25 m3/s. The Kelani River provides hydropower, fisheries, and irrigation.
