Hurulu Eco Park Safari and explore the land of 10,000 hectares of mysterious wilderness that plays a precious role in the dry zone ecosystem in Sri Lanka supporting the wildlife as an evergreen forest. And look for the phenomenal wildlife sightings around the scenic Hurulu wewa reservoir which is the heart of the park.

Climate and vegetation in Hurulu Eco Park

Hurulu Forest Reserve in Sri Lanka is a thriving ecosystem with a variety of creatures. It was designated as a biosphere reserve in 1977. The forest reserve is a very important habitat for the Sri Lankan elephant. The animal is known for its migratory behaviour and does so, especially in the dry season in the forests situated around the area. Hurulu forest reserve represents Sri Lanka’s dry-zone dry evergreen forests.

The annual mean temperature is 27.3 °C. and the area receives 1,600 mm of precipitation annually. A distinct dry season of three to six months persists from the months of April/May to September. The elevation ranges from 90 m to 150 m above sea level.

Wildlife in Hurulu Eco Park

You’ll spot many of the park’s diverse wildlife including wild elephants, deer, wild buffalo, grey langers, purple-faced leaf monkeys and many kinds of birds including peacock, jungle fowl, parrot, ula lena, hawk, eagle, owl, greater coucal, spotted munia, kingfisher, black headed oriole, paradise flycatcher & etc.

Safari at Hurulu Eco Park

There are 3 safari options available for the guest.

  1. Morning Safari (6.00 am-11.00 am)
  2. Afternoon Safari (2.30 pm – 6.00 pm)
  3. Full-day Safari (5.45 am -6.00 pm)

The safari would take place with an experienced guide in specially modified comfortable jeeps for a unique safari experience. The tour could be more customized for guests for their preferences (Family safari, honeymoon safari, photography safari etc.).

Tour in brief

Initial meeting with the safari guide, a brief of the tour will take place at the entrance. For the morning half-day tour, the starting time will be at 6 a.m. while the afternoon tour begins at 2.30 p.m.

After entering the national park with your guide in a jeep, you will be able to spot several species of birds and other animals that have made their homes in this sanctuary. The guide will explain the various interesting attributes as you will learn and enjoy the flora and fauna.

You will be taken through most of the Hurulu Eco Park, covering the wetlands, grasslands, forest patches, etc. We will make longer stops at certain watering holes for unique photography opportunities.
