Historical Mansion Museum

The Historical Mansion Museum is a Dutch house that has been restored and is located on Leyn Baan Street in Galle Fort. The museum is owned by a long-time Galle Fort resident and may be the country’s largest private museum. It also has a Dutch well in the courtyard that dates from 1763. The museum’s collection includes antique typewriters, jewelry, cameras, VOC China, and numerous other colonial artifacts. Aside from this, history is brought to life through live demonstrations of traditional crafts such as ‘beeralu’ lace embroidery, gem cutting and polishing.

The central courtyard is the main highlight of the museum where visitors can take a look at the various sculptures of stone, Chinese porcelain items and many other things from the colonial era. The museum sells table-cloths, ancient items, antiques, handicrafts, and precious jewellery.
