Elephant Rock in Arugam Bay

A perfect location for long walks and witnessing stunning colourful sunsets is Elephant rock in Arugam Bay

Elephant Rock is a famous beginner’s surfers point in Arugam bay, Eastern province. It is an undiscovered place that’s perfect for exploring untouched beaches. Also, a hiking location where you can take in a gorgeous sunrise or sunset.

The ideal times to go would be during the early hours of the morning and in the evening. But in the morning you may be able to catch wild elephants roaming around nearby.

It can get crowded from time to time. You will find a lot of surfers here as the water is shallow. The direction of the waves lean towards the right and are point break. There is a mix of groundswells and wind swells. All stages of the tide are great for surfing. There are many offshore mornings during the peak season. And several breaks that have headlands, which provide wind protection. The wind is what makes the waves rideable and pretty clean. The size of the wave ranges from 2 ft to 6 ft. The best time for surfing in Arugam Bay is from May to October when the ocean has its steady rhythm. From April to September the waves break on all tides and are suitable for surfers of all skills.

This Rock is a small outcrop at the edge of a cove and it offers some fantastic panoramic views. It is a beautiful golden strip of beach. Unspoiled apart from a few people selling drinks out of small boats. Sri Lanka is an island full of lagoons. Especially near beaches, and at the rear end of Elephant Rock. There is a lovely lagoon with dark murky waters, flanked by a small mangrove forest.
