Kudumbigala Monastery

The Ancient Kudumbigala Monastery was built in 246 BC, during the time of King Devanampiyatissa

Kudumbigala Monastery is Situated on a beautiful rock and eleven miles from Panama and seventeen miles away from the Kumana Village.

This Monastery belongs to the highlands between 100-500 feet above sea level. This is a place of worship where the monks meditate. It is a once-in-a-lifetime must-visit place. If you visit Arugam Bay, go there and do not forget to take alms or dry food and other necessities to the monks who live there.

This sacred place is very valuable in Sri Lanka. And sacred to the touch of about 12000 great Arahants.

There are large dripstone caves here and in some places they date back to BC. Brahmanical inscriptions from periods 2-5 are also there. Remains of buildings and remains of ancient paintings can identify on some of the rocks.

 It is also clear that Kudumbigala is another unique archaeological site in the Eastern Province with archaeological ruins reaching over 700-800 acres. This is because the shrine is located far away from the cities in the dry zone.

According to the Legend, this sacred place was later defaced was renovated.
