July, August and September are the very best for Surfing in Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is a historic settlement that is now dominated by surf tourism. The curvature of the bay, combined with the tides and the reefs, make it perfect to ride 2-metre-high waves out in the bay area. It is an international surfing competition venue.  it is a destination more suited for advanced surfers. It also hosted the So Sri Lanka Pro 2019.

The best time to surf in Arugam Bay is from April to October. But July, August and September are the very best. The morning period is ideal for surfing here. Because the wind generally swings onshore after about noon during this season.

There are five famous surfing points here:

  1. Whiskey Point – Intermediate -Ten kilometres North of Arugam Bay.
  2. Pottuvil Point – Advanced – A few minutes North of Arugam Bay.
  3. Elephant Rock – Beginner – A few minutes south of Arugam Bay, also known as Crocodile Rock.
  4. Okanda – Advanced – The region’s Southernmost peak, an hour away from Arugam and just North of Yala National Park.
  5. Peanut Farm – Intermediate – A little South of Arugam Bay.

The areas that are popular among the surfing community here are Main Point, Pottuvil Point and Crocodile Rock. Assuming that you are a pro surfer, you most probably have your own board. however, if you do not, you can easily rent or buy one here. those who are still in the surf early stages can learn surf lessons too.
