Dunhinda Falls

Dunhinda Falls, about 5 kilometres from Badulla, the capital of Uva Province, are formed by the Badulu Oya, which gives the town its name. The 64-meter-high waterfalls got their name from the smoky spray that surrounded the bassin, as “dun” means mist in Sinhala. Bridal Falls is an English name for the waterfall because the waterfall’s shape resembles a bridal veil. A scenic 1.5-kilometre-long jungle path leads to the observation platform at Dunhinda Falls’ bassin.

The best time to see this beautiful waterfall is during the months of June and July, although it is worth a visit at any time of the year. There is a narrow footpath leading people towards the waterfall and care should be taken along the way. There are also quite a few monkeys in the area. It is advised not to bathe in the water stream as it is very dangerous.

There is also a lookout point for the Small Dunhinda Falls which is further downstream. Like many other waterfalls in Sri Lanka, This is also under threat from a hydroelectricity project.
