Batticaloa

A major city in the Eastern Province is Batticaloa and its former capital. it is linked to the mainland by a causeway, bridge, and ferry and by road and railway connections. Batticaloa is the trading centre for rice and coconuts from nearby plantations and for other agricultural products. It was captured by the Portuguese in 1622, by the Dutch in 1638, and by the British in 1796.

This city has a tropical wet and dry climate under the Koppen climate classification, also generically referred to as a ‘dry-monsoonal climate’. It’s climate is temperate throughout the year. From March to May, the warmest time of the year, the maximum temperature averages around 32 degrees Celsius (88 degrees Fahrenheit).
