Batticaloa Lighthouse
Batticaloa Lighthouse was built in 1913 and is 28 meters high
The Batticaloa Lighthouse, also known as the Muttuwaran Lighthouse, is located 5 kilometres from the city of Batticaloa, near the Palameenmadu estuary (a 15-20 minute ride). It is located exactly where the lagoon meets the Indian Ocean along the Bar Road, a stretch of sand found along the lagoon. It is 28 meters tall and was built in 1913 by the British who ruled Sri Lanka at the time. When you reach the top of the lighthouse, you are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the lagoon and its surroundings. This lighthouse was neglected and not properly cared for as a result of the country’s Civil War, which lasted over 25 years. Although the Boxing Day Tsunami devastated the surrounding area, the lighthouse sustained only minor damage.
