About Ella

Ella is a small town in the Badulla District, located about 1,000 meters above sea level. That’s just high enough for refreshing vacations on the otherwise tropical island of Sri Lanka, but it’s never as cold as Nuwara Eliya. It is a lovely town surrounded by hills covered in dark cloud forests or light green tea plantations from the Uva region. The small town has a railway station on the Colombo-Badulla line, which runs through Sri Lanka’s central tea highlands. “Ella” is a Sinhala word that means “waterfall.” In fact, there are several waterfalls in the Ella area.
