Matale is the Matale District’s administrative capital. It is the district’s most urbanized and populated centre. Matale is also the central province’s second-largest municipal and urban centre, after Kandy. It is situated in the heart of the island’s central hills, in a broad, fertile valley at an elevation of 364 m (1,194 ft) above sea level. The Knuckles Mountain Range surrounds the city, and the foothills were dubbed Wiltshire by the British. Matelle is another name for this location

The most important historical incident in Matale is the writing of the thripitaka, which took place in Aluvihare during the reign of King Walagamba in 89-77 BC. As a result, this is permanent evidence for human settlements in Matale dating back centuries. There are folklore origins for the name “Matale.” It is stated that “Mahatala” was renamed Matale because it is located in a valley, and also because King Gajaba invaded “Soli Rata” and brought and settled 12,000 peoples in this area, which was renamed Matale. There are several folktales associated with the name Matale. Mahathala is the name given to a large valley area. It gradually evolved into Matale.
