About Point Pedro
Point Pedro is a beautiful town that lies in the Jaffna District of Sri Lanka. It lies at the northernmost point of the island. In the year 2004, this area was badly devastated by the Tsunami. Locals say that fishing boats were located 1 km inland. Here the shoreline is magnificent given its coral reef offshore and misty white sandy beach. The sea here is shallow and not a very good spot for swimming. From here, you’ll pass through the succession of tiny hamlets where you can even spot a few sharks.
The crumbling Point Pedro is the second town in the Jaffna peninsula. It has few pieces of evidence of an ingrained colonial style. The settlements are poor and irregular here. However, you may struggle to find a place to eat. The town has a bus station that is located 100 meters southwards. The Eastern coast of the town is 3 miles wide with a 20-mile-long beach that is brimming with sand dunes that may go up to a height of 100 feet often sprawling to Thalayady. The soil here is porous and has a water table deep underground which has an estimated one billion litres of fresh water. Given its geography, Point Pedro is a great tourist attraction in Sri Lanka.
Sakkotai Cape
Sakkotai Cape is the northernmost point of Sri Lanka, located a short distance away from the town of Point Pedro. Home to a dilapidated lighthouse in a northern naval base, and a directional signpost that marks the distance to various countries, the locale of Point Pedro features a coastal drive that runs along the top edge of our teardrop-shaped isle. On its eastern front, a concrete flag of Sri Lanka marks Sakkotai Cape against the backdrop of the Indian Ocean.
Sakkotai Cape rests upon a rocky shoreline at the edge of Point Pedro. And if you drive along the northern perimeter of our island, you may even be able to see the southern coastline of India with the naked eye.
